Now, more than ever before it has become important to take care of ourselves. We took time as part of the #TogetherFOREVER campaign, to ask Charlene Ferreira, Hydro Manager at Badplaas, A Forever Resort for her top DIY self-care treatments to do at home.
Cracked heels
Listerine soak
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of Listerine mouth wash
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- 2 cups of water
Method:
- Prepare a mixture of Listerine, white vinegar, and cups of water in a large tub (large enough for both of your feet).
- Soak your feet in the mixture for 15 minutes.
- Remove your feet from the mixture and scrub them using a pumice stone to remove dead skin.
- Rinse your feet with clean water.
- Pat dry and moisturise.
Repeat this process daily until your heels heal.
Sugared scrub
Ingredients:
- 3 teaspoons of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 2 to 3 drops of apple cider vinegar
Method:
- Prepare a mixture of sugar, honey and apple cider vinegar. Stir well until the mixture forms a thick paste.
- Soak your feet in lukewarm water for about 10 minutes and then gently scrub using the paste to remove dead skin.
Repeat this process two to three times a week.
Banana rub
Ingredients:
- 2 ripe bananas (make sure the bananas are ripe as unripe bananas contain acid that is harsh for your skin)
Method:
- Mash ripe bananas into a smooth paste.
- Gently rub the paste all over your feet, including the nails beds and sides of your toes. Leave the paste on for 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, rinse your feet thoroughly with clean water.
- Repeat this process every night before going to bed for two weeks or, until you are satisfied with the results.
Dry Feet
Oil rub
Ingredients:
Method:
- Step one: Clean your feet thoroughly.
- Step two: Dry your feet using a soft towel.
- Step three: Apply a thick layer of vegetable oil to your heels and toes.
- Step four: Put on a pair of clean comfortable socks and leave them overnight.
Repeat this process daily before bed.
Vicks rub
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons of Vicks VapoRub
Method:
- Apply a generous layer of Vicks VapoRub to your feet.
- Massage for 5 minutes, and then put on clean comfortable socks (preferably cotton if possible).
- Wash your feet with lukewarm water the following morning.
Repeat this process daily before bed.
Lemon rub
Ingredients:
- 3 to 4 drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon of Vaseline
Method:
- Soak your feet in warm water for about 20 minutes. Rinse and pat dry.
- Add freshly squeezed lemon juice to Vaseline and mix well.
- Apply this mixture to your heels and other cracked parts of your feet..
- Wear a pair of woollen socks and let it sit overnight.
- Wash using warm water in the morning.
Repeat this process daily before bed.
Beard rehydration
Beard Oil treatment
Ingredients:
- 75g coconut oil
- 25g shea butter
- 15g cocoa butter
- 5 drops of tea tree oil
- 5 drops of cedar wood oil
Method:
- Using a heat resistant glass jug (like a Pyrex jug), add all the ingredients. Heat in the microwave on a low heat to melt the oils and butter.
- When melted, pour into a small jar (preferably also glass). If you are using plastic, allow the mixture to cool slightly before pouring it over).
- Once the mixture has cooled this can be used on the beard every evening or/ and every morning after washing up.
Soft and smooth lips
Vanilla Lip Balm
Ingredients:
- 10g olive oil
- 30g coconut oil
- 20g cocoa butter
- 2 to 3 drops of vanilla essence
Method:
- Melt the cocoa butter with the oils. Add a vanilla essence to make it smell delicious (if you prefer a different scent, you can substitute the Vanilla essence with a different essence).
- Pour the mixture into a small container and allow cooling off before use. The mixture may go soft during warm days; if it is generally warm where you stay it is recommended to add a little more cocoa butter to make the balm more solid.
Body care
Sugar and Spice Scrub
Ingredients:
- 50g sunflower oil
- 50g olive oil
- 50g coconut oil
- 100g cocoa butter
- One teaspoon nutmeg
- One teaspoon cinnamon
- One teaspoon vanilla essence
- One teaspoon cocoa powder
- 400g brown sugar
Method:
- Add the sunflower oil, olive oil and cocoa butter together and melt gently over low heat until all is melted. Use a heat resistance glass beaker or jug.
- Add nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla essence and cocoa powder, and miss well.
- Add brown sugar and stir by hand.
- Pack into large jars.
- Use the scrub over your body (externally only) to rub off any dead skin focussing on your knees, elbows and feet. Rise the mixture off thoroughly with warm water.
Muscle bath soak
Ingredients:
- 100g almond flour
- 20g citric acid
- 100g sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
- 200g salt
- 200g Epsom salts
- 5 to 10 drops essential oil of your choice
Method:
- Add all the dry powders and salt together. Stir by hand or, if adding in a jar, shake ingredients together.
- Add essential oil, mix together or shake. If adding rose petal or/ and herbs, mix in gently.
- Add 1/3 cup to bath water and soak for at least 10 minutes.
Relaxing Lavender Bath Soak
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of milk powder
- 6 drops of lavender essential oil
- 10ml baby oil
Method:
- Mix all the ingredients together.
- Put mixed ingredients into water and soak for at least ten minutes.
- This soak will work best before going to bed.
